The Atrium, a mid 70’s office block in the Zuidas business district of Amsterdam was transformed by MVSA Architects in 2017. A key element of the internal redesign is a huge pivoting wall that opens and divides the large foyer. Four door leaves, each weighing 500kg, offer a full 360 degree rotation at the touch of a finger.
As the heart of the Zuidas’ new 'live - work - socialise' ethos, MVSA Architects' redesign of the Atrium embodies an ‘anything is possible’ approach to design. Within the extensive foyer, four oversized timber door panels of 500kg were combined with the FritsJurgen System 3 pivot to create a groundbreaking design that is both beautiful and practical.
These center-hung pivoting doors are held in place entirely by the small floor plate of the System 3 that goes only 8mm deep into the floor.
Despite the weight and height of the doors, the System 3 hinge allows the pivoting wall to be opened and closed with ease. The 360° rotation features hold positions at every 90 degrees.
