For architects tasked with the design and fit-out of the next generation of luxury retail, the challenge can lie in tying the brand’s heritage with a forward-looking spatial narrative. The Burberry flagship on New Bond Street, London, offers a masterclass in this balancing act. The design's calming aesthetic is subtly supported by the inclusion of eight pivot hinges, which provide smooth, effortless operation for frameless doors throughout the main retail and VIP areas.
British heritage design traditionally evokes thoughts of dark and moody interiors, the designers and architects of Burberry New Bond Street broke with that tradition to create something minimal and sleek, yet perfectly on brand.
High-gloss white surfaces are contrasted with polished gold finishes, which both tie in with subtle nods to the brand’s most famous checked fabric. The 1920s Burberry Check is represented in a striking overhead lighting design, while frameless doors subtly glide across a checkered floor of dark brown and beige tiles.
The concealed doors run flush with the matching wall and recessed gold skirting. They are fitted with the best-in-class pivot hinge, the FritsJurgens System M+.
The precisely engineered motion is made possible by the hinge’s latch control, damper control, and 30° speed control. The finished result is a silent, graceful movement that won’t detract from the store’s calming ambience.
